Motives Behind the Sikh Couple's Murder Must Be Exposed; Minorities and Their Places of Worship Must Be Fully Protected, Says Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora
Punjab Minister for Minority Affairs, Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, has called on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to uncover the motives behind the brutal murder of a Sikh couple in Mardan and ensure the protection of minority communities and their places of worship across the province. He stated that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police should also assess the mental health and attitudes of its personnel to help prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
He was addressing a press conference in Mardan alongside minority Member of the Provincial Assembly Suresh Kumar and Pakistan Muslim League-N District President Syed Inayat Shah Bacha. Earlier, Sardar Ramesh Singh met with Mardan DIG Qasim Ali Khan and DPO Masood Ahmad to discuss the investigation and progress made in the case. He also attended a prayer ceremony at the Gurdwara organized by the Sikh community and met the victims’ daughter to express his condolences and sympathy.
Sardar Ramesh Singh said that a significant Sikh population once resided in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; however, their numbers have steadily declined due to various circumstances. He noted that the incident in Mardan’s Babu Mohalla not only damaged Pakistan’s international image but was also widely covered by global media, causing deep concern and anger among Sikh communities around the world.
He said that the DIG and DPO Mardan had assured him that the arrested suspect was being investigated strictly on merit and would be brought to justice in accordance with the law. He demanded that the scope of the investigation be expanded to uncover all motives and possible factors behind the incident.
Questioning the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial minister asked why such incidents continue to occur in the province and to what extent the government is fulfilling its responsibility to protect citizens, particularly minorities. He stressed that the case should not be dismissed as merely the act of an individual and that all aspects of the incident must be thoroughly investigated.
He further stated that individuals holding extremist views should be kept away from minority places of worship, and if any member of the police force is found to possess such ideologies, strict action should be taken against them. He also demanded complete security for the family of the murdered Sikh couple and for those involved in registering the case.
Sardar Ramesh Singh praised the Sikh community of Mardan for maintaining peace despite their grief and sorrow, saying that their decision not to resort to protests or violence was commendable. He added that an attack on minorities anywhere in the country affects not just one region but the image of Pakistan as a whole.
He urged both the federal and provincial governments to adopt a joint strategy to eliminate terrorism and extremism from the country and to make the protection of all citizens, without discrimination, their top priority.
